Bill 11 — The Miscellaneous Statutes (Public Registries Enhancement) Amendment Act, 2024 (No. 2)

Assented to on 2025-05-13 · Sponsor: Tim McLeod

Allows registrars of the Co-operatives and Non-profit Corporations registries to verify users' identities and to authorize the use of digital signatures.

  • Lets the registrar verify the identity of people searching or submitting documents to the registry
  • Keeps identity verification information private and outside the public register
  • Allows sharing of identity verification information with police, RCMP or Canada Revenue Agency for investigations
  • Lets the registrar set rules for which digital signatures and technologies are acceptable for filings
  • Exempts registry digital signatures from The Electronic Information and Documents Act, 2000
  • Gives government power to make regulations on data access, disclosure and use of registry information
  • Applies the same identity verification and digital signature rules to both the Co-operatives Act and Non-profit Corporations Act

✋ What is “challenging”?

One click on “Ask for an explanation” = a citizen request for the bill's sponsor to explain it in plain language, and for us to keep an eye on it together.

An account (email) is required — one request per person, no anonymous requests. Each bill's total is public: it shows which bills people want explained.
