Updates The Credit Union Act, 1998 to modernize membership withdrawal, termination and appeal procedures, record-keeping rules, and notice delivery methods.
- Sets out clear rules for how members can voluntarily withdraw from a credit union, by oral or written notice
- Allows a credit union to treat prolonged member inactivity as a withdrawal notice under conditions set by regulation
- Creates a detailed process for the board to terminate a member's membership, including notice and hearing rights
- Gives terminated members a right to appeal to the credit union's members or, in some cases, to the court
- Requires credit unions to repay withdrawing or terminated members' shares, deposits and other amounts within regulated timeframes
- Updates rules for record retention, destruction, and providing members paper copies of articles and bylaws
- Changes allowed methods for serving legal notices, removing certified mail and adding regulation-prescribed methods
