Bill 36 — The Change of Name Amendment Act, 2025

Assented to on 2026-05-14 · Sponsor: Jeremy Cockrill

Updates Saskatchewan's Change of Name Act to allow single names based on culture or religion and to modernize rules on name changes, consents, and fees.

  • Allows a person's name to be a single name determined by their culture or religion, subject to director approval
  • Requires written consent from a spouse before someone can apply to change that spouse's name
  • Replaces the term 'double surname' with 'surname consisting of more than one component' throughout the Act
  • Lets a person or their spouse choose just one part of a multi-part surname as their legal surname
  • Removes fees for altering vital statistics birth records when a name change occurs in another jurisdiction
  • Allows police force members to access vital statistics change-of-name information alongside existing officials
  • Requires that 'resident of Saskatchewan' and living in Canada be defined as being on a permanent basis

One click on “Ask for an explanation” = a citizen request for the bill's sponsor to explain it in plain language, and for us to keep an eye on it together.

An account (email) is required — one request per person, no anonymous requests. Each bill's total is public: it shows which bills people want explained.
