Bill 56 — The King's Bench Amendment Act, 2026

Creates a new office of "associate judge" within the Court of King's Bench, setting out their appointment, powers, pay and discipline process.
- Allows the Lieutenant Governor in Council to appoint associate judges with legal or judicial experience
- Gives associate judges most of the same powers as judges, except for certain criminal, liberty and contempt matters
- Requires associate judges to retire at age 70 and allows appointment of relief associate judges up to age 75
- Sets up a commission to recommend associate judges' salaries, pensions and benefits, reviewed every four years
- Establishes an associate judges review council to investigate complaints of misconduct or incapacity
- Allows the council to suspend, reprimand, or recommend removal of an associate judge after a hearing
- Lets an associate judge's oath, residence and restrictions on outside work be set similarly to those of judges
