Bill 58 — The Time Act, 2026

Assented to on 2026-05-14 · Sponsor: Eric Schmalz

Sets central standard time as the official time for Saskatchewan while allowing designated border areas to follow a different time zone.

  • Establishes central standard time (UTC-6) as the standard time observed in Saskatchewan
  • Allows the minister to create time option areas near the provincial border that follow a neighbouring jurisdiction's time
  • Time option areas can use UTC-5, UTC-6 or UTC-7, for all or part of the year
  • Requires municipal requests or government consultation with municipalities and First Nations before creating a time option area
  • Requires public notice at least 30 days before a new time option area takes effect
  • Gives this Act priority over other laws, bylaws and orders, including Lloydminster's city charter
  • Repeals the former Time Act and updates a reference in The Election Act, 1996

✋ What is “challenging”?

One click on “Ask for an explanation” = a citizen request for the bill's sponsor to explain it in plain language, and for us to keep an eye on it together.

An account (email) is required — one request per person, no anonymous requests. Each bill's total is public: it shows which bills people want explained.
