Bill 6 — The Safe Public Spaces (Street Weapons) Act

Prohibits carrying certain weapons like knives, swords, machetes, body armour and strong pepper spray in public urban spaces, with specific exceptions.
- Bans possessing street weapons (knives, swords, machetes, body armour, explosives, strong pepper spray) in public places
- Allows possession at home, while transporting to lawful storage, or for legitimate work, food preparation or wildlife protection reasons
- Lets police seize and impound suspected street weapons without needing a criminal charge first
- Sets rules for owners to request return of seized items within set time limits after charges are dropped or dismissed
- Allows courts to order forfeiture to the Crown if a person is convicted or fails to claim the item in time
- Creates offence with penalties up to a $5,000 fine, one year imprisonment, or both
- Gives municipalities and First Nations the choice to opt into the Act, and their bylaws override this Act if they conflict
