Bill 7 — The Court of Appeal (Residency) Amendment Act, 2024

Changes rules on where Court of Appeal judges must live and increases the number of judges on the court.

  • Removes Humboldt from the definition of a northern centre
  • Increases the number of judges on the Court of Appeal from 6 to 7
  • Requires the chief justice and judges to normally reside in Regina
  • Allows the chief justice to permit a limited number of judges to live in Saskatoon instead
  • Lets a judge keep a Saskatoon residence once approved, unless the judge agrees to move
  • Allows a judge who leaves office to still deliver a decision on a case within 6 months
  • Gives the Lieutenant Governor in Council power to make regulations, including capping how many judges can live in Saskatoon
